WBJEE Exam Pattern 2020 – Key Dates, Marking Scheme & Merit Lists

Are you planning to write West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) 2020? Did you know that the board has released the exam pattern of the WBJEE? Worry not. WBJEE is mandatory for engineering, pharmaceutical, architectural and technological courses offered by the government, private and self-financing colleges. This exam is conducted once in every year. The WBJEE for the year 2020 is to be conducted on 2nd February.

The KEY Dates

Filling in an application for WBJEE 2020 is to be completed on or before November 2019 with changes if any before 16th November 2019. The admit cards can be downloaded on the 27th of January 2020 for the exam conducted on the 2nd of February 2020. The date for results announcement is yet to be revealed. WBJEE Exam Patterns

For being confident and successful, check out the following information about exam paper, syllabus and marking scheme.

Mode of the exam:

  • The exam is conducted in an offline mode
  • Candidates will be provided with question booklets
  • Answers are to be filled in OMR sheets

Duration of the exam

  • Two sessions of two hours each
  • Forenoon session from 11 am to 1 pm for Mathematics
  • Afternoon session from 2 pm to 4 pm for Physics and chemistry together

Category of papers

  • For admissions to engineering/technological/architecture/pharmacy courses, both the sessions
  • For pharmacy only courses, the candidates can appear for afternoon session only

Marking Scheme

For category 1

  • Questions will have only one correct answer with 1 mark for every correct answer and .25 negative mark for wrong answers
  • More than one answer will also result in an incorrect answer and will lead to .25 negative mark for your wbjee 2020 exam pattern.

For Category 2

  • Questions will have only one correct answer with 2 marks for every correct answer and .5 negative mark for wrong answers
  • More than one answer will also result in an incorrect answer and will lead to .5 negative mark

For Category 3

  • Questions contain more than one answer with 2 marks for correct answers.
  • Questions that are not attempted and wrong answers with the wrong combination will not carry any negative marking and will be graded zero.
  • For partial correct answers, the total marks will be based on the number of the total number of correct answers by the formula given below

Mark = Number of correct response x 2

Total number of correct options

Although, if candidates marking more than one answer will be awarded .5 negative mark.

Answering Mode

  • Answers are to marked in the Optical Machine-readable Response (OMR) Sheets
  •  The answers are to be indicated by darkening the corresponding circles completely by a blue/black ballpoint pen for your exam pattern of wbjee
  • Fillings like a dot or a circle or underline or a cross mark or tick mark are considered incorrect. r partially marked or overwriting in the OMR sheets will lead to ambiguous reading by the machine and hence the board will not be responsible for losing the mark due to such markings
  • Remember, answers once marked cannot be changed or erased
  • Don’t mark any answers until and unless you are sure about attempting it

Ranking of Merit Lists

The number of added candidates appearing for the exam and average marks scored in each paper, the cut off scores will be calculated. The allotment of seats is based on the eligibility criteria, and the ranks obtained. The merit ranks shall be generated based on the following notes

  • The classes will be based on scores secured in both paper 1 and 2 equally
  • In the order of descending marks, the classes will be prepared
  • In case of the same level, tie-breaking rules will be applied
  • Category based ranking will also be established based on categories like SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, PwD, and TFW
  • The allotment of seats will be based on the counseling process which will be scheduled based on the general Merit Rank (GMR)
  • In addition to GMR, specific colleges like University of Calcutta, Jadavpur University, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Neotia University, Aliah Unversity, and Sister Nivedita university have custom-designed eligibility criteria for admissions
  • On discovery of incorrect information on the application, the rank of the corresponding candidate will be canceled
  • Candidates procuring individual category reservations while seat allotment, are expected to provide certificates as a proof of the statement
  • If candidates applying for special categories are failing to produce the documents, they will be considered in the general categories, and the categorical ranks will not be considered
  • For the pharmacy admission, Pharmacy Merit Rank (PMR) will be based on paper 2 (Physics and Chemistry) only
  • Candidates appearing for only paper one will not be considered for any ranking

Tie Breaking Rules for Ranking

For candidates with the same rank, the following set of tie-breaking rules for GMR in the given order will be considered while revising the rank

  • Mathematics and physics questions will contain more positive marks
  • Mathematics and physics questions will contain more positive marks
  • Mathematics and physics questions will contain fewer negative marks
  • Mathematics and physics questions will contain fewer negative marks
  • Category 3 of mathematics with two marks question will carry more positive marks
  • Group 3 of physics with two marks question will give more positive marks
  • Division 3 of chemistry with two marks question will give more positive marks
  • Category 3 of mathematics with two marks question will give more positive marks
  • Category 3 of mathematics with two marks question will give fewer negative marks
  • Category 3 of physics with two marks question will give fewer negative marks
  • Category 3 of chemistry with two marks question will carry fewer negative marks

The tie-breaking rules for PMR are slightly different

  • Physics and chemistry together will take fewer negative marks
  • Physics questions will give more positive marks
  • Chemistry questions will give fewer negative marks
  • Category 3 of chemistry with two marks question will give more positive marks
  • Category 3 of chemistry with two marks question will give fewer negative marks
  • Category 3 of physics with two marks question will carry more positive marks
  • Category 3 of physics with two marks question will carry fewer negative marks

Final Tie Breaking Rule

Even after the rules mentioned above applied, if there are candidates with the same rankings, then the date of birth will be considered. The candidate with the older date of birth will be given preference.

Exam Center

While filling in the application, the candidate will be asked three choices of exam center in a preferred order. The 1st preferred choice of location will be allotted to the candidate to write the WBJEE 2020. Under exceptional situations, an exam zone can be scraped off the list, and hence one needs to be careful in choosing the location.
